Hopefully I’ll be wrapping up a 30-sec animation soon. The character animation is done in Flash, over a still photo. Which is then brought into After Effects for some special effects.

Guest Art at Penny Arcade - explained

After Mike (Gabe) caught the flu last week, he asked me if I could do a guest art for him while he recovers. Of course I love Penny Arcade so my answer was “yes”.

Now a lot of people are telling me they don’t understand the comic. I guess I could have drawn Tycho and Gabe like everyone else that submitted a guest comic, but I didn’t. I decided to do a comic about the latest game I was playing, which is Batman: Arkham Asylum. I love the game; I believe it’s the best Batman game up to date. Jess also has been playing the game. When I asked her what she thought about the game, the first thing she pointed out was that Batman is freakin huge in the game and he was crawling/crouching through air-vents. So that’s where the comic came from.

Yeah, I could have done a better job on the coloring, better contrast, and made it obvious it was batman’s butt stuck in the vent. I showed it to Tycho and Gabe and they both liked it. At the end, that what matters. I helped a good friend out.

Comic Strip Superstar Contest

Jess and I are entering a comic strip contest where the Universal Press Syndicate will narrow the entries down to 50 comics. Then the popular comic strip creators G.B. Trudeau (Doonesbury), Lynn Johnston (For Better or For Worse), Scott Hilburn (The Argyle Sweater), and Mark Tatulli (Lió andHeart of the City) will choose 10 finalists. At the end, a voting will be held to decide on the winner. The submission requires two weeks of comic strips and two sunday comic strips.

The comic we’re about to submit is called Turnip Greens. It is a fictional story based on mixed faith couples all over the world. This comic is just a slice of that, based in rural Alabama, Dorothy and Sahmir face challenges that any normal newlywed would. The comic also explores the regions that they visit and the different forms of support and dissent they will encounter.

I have been sitting on this piece for months. The goal was to take two photos and combine them in a way it looks interesting. For me, the most challenging part was to change the colors on the model to match the forest. View the slideshow above to view the different stages.

Snow Leopard

Today I took the final step and installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro, which is my main machine. I had the updated OS running on my laptop for about a week now. I’m happy to say I haven’t encountered any problems yet. So I’m going to say it’s safe to install on my work machine.

Ruby on Rails

Today I thought I would do some research on Ruby on Rails, try out some of the tutorials on the web. You know, to get a taste of what it’s about. However, I ended up spending most of the time searching the web to understand why it wasn’t working the way it suppose to. As it turns out, a lot of the tutorials were written during 1.0 and a lot was changed for the 2.0

Maybe I’ll give it a shot another day.

Earlier this week, I challenged Jamie and Fred to draw Batman vs. the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Originally I was picturing an epic battle between Batman and the turtles. Then I thought, the turtles are bunch of teenagers, kids. If they got together, Batman would have to babysit them in the batcave.
